As a professional photographer, I have several cameras (including DSLRs and a mirrorless camera model) that I like to use for specific purposes. And when there are kids in the house, they are sure to be excited with the cameras and photography-related accessories lying around from an early age.

The same happened with my kid. As fascinated as he was with my DSLR, my little one couldn’t possibly pick it up, let alone shoot with it! But not one to give up, he kept pestering me for a camera until I finally relented. Of course, I could have gone for the regular point and shoots, but taking into account that kids are quite likely to drop it, I opted for a kids camera instead.

Editor’s Choice
Agoigo Camera

A versatile action camera designed especially for kids.

The cameras for kids are slightly different from regular cameras, as the focus is more on ease of use and durability and not as much on superior picture quality (although I feel that’s desirable too).

If you are also thinking of buying your little one a kid’s camera as a present on their next birthday, you’ll be happy to know that you do have some pretty good options to choose from. Here is my guide covering some of the best cameras for kids that the little ones are sure to love!

Best Cameras for Kids for Digital Photography

Kids are fascinated by photos – you can actually calm down a kid throwing a tantrum by showing them a few nice pictures. So just imagine how happy they will be with a digital camera made especially for children.

These cameras are lightweight yet sturdy enough to withstand the rough use that a child is likely to subject it to.  And they are affordably priced as well! Below are some of the best digital cameras for kids that can help them make an early start in the world of photography.

A versatile action camera designed especially for kids.

This digital camera comes with a 5-megapixel sensor along with a 4x zoom lens. This means that your child can actually experience the thrill of shooting objects from afar! Of course, you can’t expect the picture quality to be as good as those taken by smartphone cameras, but I would say it is quite decent for the price. Most importantly, your kid is surely going to be satisfied by the pictures they take, and honestly, that is what actually matters!

The camera can shoot HD videos too! In fact, the video quality is quite like a much more advanced camera. The audio quality of the videos could be better though!

The best thing about this digital camera is that your kid can easily use it underwater without any worries! Of course, you need to ensure that it’s packed securely inside the provided protective casing. It can function up to a depth of 98 feet, so you can easily let your child pop it into the pool while they are splashing in the water.

The battery life is great – your child can use it for hours without any chances of the battery running out! And it also comes with a free 32 GB SD memory card.

The HANGRUI Kids Camera is one of the most adorable toy cameras that you will ever come across! This will especially appeal to children in the age range of 3 to 9 years.

It is equipped with a 20-megapixel sensor and 8x zoom – perfect for teaching kids the art of photography. Your child is sure to enjoy clicking pictures and showing them off to the whole family! Of course, the camera cannot capture extremely detailed and sharp images, but the pictures do come out well enough to be liked by the children.

This point and shoot camera performs well as a video camera, too, thanks to the 1080p full HD recording capabilities. You can’t say that it’s one of the best video cameras for kids, but it’s a decent one for the price. Moreover, young children are sure to enjoy the many fun features, shooting modes, and filters included within this toy camera.

Designed to be child-friendly, this product is made with non-toxic silicone that adheres to international safety standards for toys. In addition, the camera is covered with a protective layer of rubber shaped like a cute cartoon. This helps the camera withstand a few knocks easily and makes it look very appealing to little ones.

This fun camera can be used to play music and educational games too. It can also function as a selfie camera, as it is equipped with dual lenses (both in front and rear). In short, you are getting a lot of attractive features at a very affordable price!

Seckton Upgrade Kids Selfie Camera

A lightweight yet sturdy camera that shoots decent images.

Megapixels: 8Weight: 6.7 ounces
Video recording: Yes (1080p)Waterproof: No

The Seckton Upgrade Kids Selfie Camera comes with a plastic body that makes it lightweight yet shockproof. This is a great camera if your kid is rough with their toys as it can easily withstand a few bumps or knocks. The same is not true for the LCD screen though.

If your child shows a talent in photography even at an early age, this camera can just give them the right start. Of course, your little one won’t need (or even understand) advanced features like manual focus, exposure control, or continuous shooting speed at this age. But when it comes to making them aware of the basic camera features, this cute little model does an exceptional job.

Equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor, this camera can actually take quite detailed photos. In fact, the images captured by this model actually exceeded my expectations! The video quality is pretty decent too, especially considering the fact that it’s a kid’s camera.

Taking selfies is easy with the dual-camera design, so be ready to see your kid decking up in their best clothes to shoot pictures of themselves. This little camera comes in multiple bright and beautiful shades, so you can get your kid one in their favorite color and watch them fall in love with it!

GKTZ Kids Camera

Multiple kid-friendly features packed in a super-lightweight body.

Megapixels: 12Weight: 2.05 ounces

The GKTZ Kids Camera is one of the most lightweight cameras I have ever come across. This makes it suitable for younger kids who tend to drop anything that they consider too heavy.

If your toddler likes to play with your smartphone camera, this little camera can act as a great replacement! Your little one will be happy to click and view all the shots they have taken, and you’ll get your phone back – sounds like a win-win situation, right?

Equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor, the camera takes above-average quality images. The image quality isn’t good enough for printing out, but not too blurry either. For a child, it’s just right. The video quality is decent as well, so expect your kid to show you their recordings every day! While the battery life could have been better, it’s enough for moderate use by a kid.

Made of ABS material, the camera is safe for use by kids. This isn’t one of the most durable cameras out there, but at this price, you really can’t expect a camera that lasts for years.

This is the perfect gift for children addicted to computers or video games. This little kids’ camera can encourage them to move around actively outdoors, capturing everything they find interesting. Moreover, it also includes several games, so your kid won’t be bored at all!

Pros
  • Very compact and lightweight

Best Instant Cameras for Kids

While kids’ digital cameras offer you the convenience of storing hundreds of photos easily, in the majority of cases, these images are easily forgotten. Being busy with our work, we usually don’t get enough time to sift through the images to decide on a few print-worthy ones.

Therefore, kids prefer instant cameras as they can see and keep all the shots that they capture. You can easily take the printed shots and create a photo album with your child’s best shots.

But not all instant cameras function equally. Even these models come equipped with different features that can make your child’s experience better. So to help you make your choice, here are some of the best instant cameras for kids that won’t disappoint you (or your kid)!

Fujifilm Instax Mini 9

An eye-catching camera for instantly printing your kid’s favorite memories.

Megapixels: 16Weight: 47.52 ounces (full kit)
Video recording: NoWaterproof: No

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 is one of the handiest instant cameras I have ever used. This pretty camera can produce nice prints of every shot you take in as little as 90 seconds!

A perfect gift for kids, this is sure to be one of the highlights of every party you have. The camera body isn’t too heavy, making it suitable for children. Older children will find it more useful, as the camera settings may seem slightly complicated for younger kids. But no matter the age of the child, everyone is going to love storing away the printed photos in an album or scrapbook.

You can expect great image quality from this instant camera. Not to mention my kid, even I wasn’t disappointed with the printed images produced by this camera! The print quality is awesome – it’s going to last forever if you store it well. It runs on 2 AA batteries, so you may have to change the batteries if you want to use them for long durations.

You can use it for close-up photos and selfies too – in fact, I am sure that this camera will be equally loved by the parents and their kids. Take it on a family vacation, and you’ll have a whole album ready by the time you return!

One issue with this camera is that the pictures come out blurry in the absence of enough light. But in daylight or with enough artificial light, it works quite well. Also, this film camera is not exceptionally tough, so you need to take care that your child doesn’t drop it from a height!

Pros
  • Lots of color options
  • Lightweight
  • Decent quality pictures
  • 90 sec printing time
Cons
  • Pictures don’t come out well in low light
  • Buying additional films is costly

Dragon Touch Instant Print Kids Camera

A 26-megapixel kid’s instant camera that can shoot HD videos.

Megapixels: 26Weight: 27.84 ounces (full kit)
Video recording: Yes (1080p)Waterproof: No

Buying cameras for kids can be really tough – they want everything all at once! And the Dragon Touch Instant Print Kids Camera is a product that offers just that. This little camera can shoot decent photos, print them out at the press of a button, and capture HD video footage too!

Equipped with a 26-megapixel sensor and 1080p video capability, this is a great gift for kids who try to mimic you taking pictures with a camera. It comes with dual-lens, making it easy to click selfies. And that’s not all – your kid will get a huge range of fun and creative filters to choose from! There are several color video modes too that make shooting videos more fun for the little ones.

The camera itself is very cutely designed with two ears, and it is also covered with a silicone layer that protects it against a few knocks.

One thing to note is that the camera can only print images in black and white, and the photos do have some amount of noise in them. It’s best to shoot with adequate light, as low-light images in black and white don’t come out well.

On the brighter side, the ink cartridges aren’t expensive, so your child can print as many pictures as they want without care!

Although the pictures don’t last very long (unless you store them very carefully) as it’s printed on regular paper and not special print paper, this instant camera is still worth purchasing. It’s sure to keep your kids busy and away from the computer or smartphone all day long!

Pros
  • Dual cameras
  • 1080p HD video capability
  • Lots of fun effects
  • Affordable cartridges
Cons
  • Print quality isn’t the best
  • Camera settings may be too complicated for small kids

KODAK Printomatic Digital Instant Print Camera

An all-in-one camera to introduce your kid to the world of digital photography.

Megapixels: 5Weight: 7.04 ounces
Video recording: NoWaterproof: No

The KODAK Printomatic Digital Instant Print Camera is one of my favorite kids’ cameras due to its ease of use and cute design. But, of course, you do have some expectations when it comes to a well-known brand like Kodak, and honestly, this camera doesn’t disappoint at all!

Equipped with a 5-megapixel sensor, it allows you (or your child) to take nice colorful photos in succession without too much waiting time. It also has an automatic flash, so you can shoot photos even in dim light!

From a child’s point of view, there couldn’t be a better instant camera! Not only are the credit card-sized prints clear and vibrant, but they are really long-lasting too. The camera uses Kodak Zink photo paper, so you won’t have any complaints about its quality. In addition, the printed photos are tear-resistant and won’t be damaged by water.

And the best part, all the pictures are sticker-style – you just need to peel off the protective paper and easily stick it in a scrapbook.

On the downside, the photo paper is rather expensive, especially when your kid is prone to taking accidental photos! The camera is rechargeable, so you won’t need to spend a fortune on buying new batteries! But the charge lasts for only around 25 photo prints. While that’s all right when your kid is playing around in general, it does pose a disadvantage while you’re on vacation.

But the camera can shoot even when it runs out of paper – provided you have installed an SD card in it. All the photos get saved on the SD card so that you can easily transfer them to your computer.

Overall, this is a pretty good option for encouraging your kid to delve into the world of photography. And you get many color options too!

Pros
  • Full-color prints
  • Built-in flash
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Ability to store images in an SD card
Cons
  • No video recording
  • Battery life could be better

Instant Print Camera for Kids

A cute and affordable instant camera that’s extremely easy to operate.

Megapixels: 24Weight: 15.8 ounces
Video recording: Yes (1080p)Waterproof: No

This instant camera is designed especially for younger kids and toddlers. However, the first thing that makes it stand out is how cute it looks! Available in blue and pink colors, this one will appeal to both girls and boys.

The camera is equipped with a 24-megapixel sensor that’s good enough for taking decent photos. It comes with dual cameras, so your kid can take selfies easily too. In addition, it shoots decent videos in 1080p full HD. Although the footage cannot compare to standard cameras with the same video resolution, it’s good enough for letting your child document their memorable moments!

It features several photo filters and effects, which your kid can select before taking a photo. Perfect for putting their creative minds to work!

The printed photos are black and white, so that may be slightly disappointing for kids. Also, you need to ensure that there’s adequate light while shooting, as this model doesn’t come with a flash.

The battery is in-built and can be easily recharged with a USB cord, so you don’t need to purchase batteries every other week! The charging time isn’t too long, and the charge stays long enough for moderate use by a child.

Of course, you can’t expect professional-quality prints. The print paper is rather thin and less likely to last for long in the hands of kids. But on the brighter side, the paper is quite affordable, so your kid can take pictures to their heart’s content!

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Lots of fun photo filters and effects
  • Decent battery life
  • Can shoot HD videos
  • Photos can be saved on an SD card
